Small image of cover art Slew [Gench/ReR Megacorp, 2004] Slew pools more than a decade of studio works spanning compilations issued by RRRecords, Tzadik, Alku, Realization, Digital Narcis, Self Abuse, Cuneiform and other groundbreaking labels. More than a compilation of compilation tracks, Slew documents the evolution of an artist dedicated to an immersive world of sound and aural vision. Bringing together many out of print and hard to find gems, Slew blurs the bounds of electro-acoustic, digital musique concrete, drone, noise, dark ambient and industrial. Dimuzio’s sonic reworkings range from an Elvis impersonator (on parade), junkyard ambiance, electric guitar, piano, voice, clarinet, feedback and shortwave sounds to cellist Tom Cora and the music of Dr. Nerve. Also featured is a new bonus track constructed from Dimuzio’s locked-groove submissions for the releases RRR-500 (RRRecords) and LockERS (E.R.S.). Slew charts the path of a prolific sound artist and composer and is an essential addition to any collection.

Small image of cover art Mono::Poly [Asphodel/Gench, 2002] Thomas Dimuzio’s Mono::Poly is the first joint production between Asphodel and Dimuzio’s own Gench Recordings label. "A double CD set, Mono::Poly anthologizes the best of Dimuzio’s live solo performances and collaborations with fellow experimental musicians, moving across multiple genre and cultural boundaries. Spanning the years 1997-2002, each track on this anthology displays Dimuzio pushing the envelope of contemporary processing technology to truly epic, post-rock proportions. Featuring the talents of collaborators and friends such as Invisbl Skratch Pikl Q-Bert, Tigerbeat6 hip-hop deconstructionist Wobbly, Henry Cow alumni and noted soloists Chris Cutler and Fred Frith, Scott Jenerik, Atau Tanaka and more, Mono::Poly is a terrific introduction to a brilliant artist working at the top of his form." —Joel Schalit

Small image of cover art Live At Generator [Generator Archives, 2001] "Generator, the sound gallery, and Generations Unlimited, the record label, welcomed new opportunities for spontaneous artistic expression. Many exceptional artists were attracted to this creative energy. No one played at the Generator for the money. They played for the joy of performing in front of an appreciative audience, and this was never more apparent than the night of March 17, 1990, when Thomas Dimuzio came to New York City to give his first ever solo concert at the Generator. Thomas had been experimenting with home recording since the early 80's. He sent a tape to my Generations Unlimited partner David Prescott whose show "No Commercial Potential" on WZBC radio in Boston featured many unknown or obscure composers and artists. From this contact Thomas' first cassette release "Delineation of Perspective" (TD-1 on the GU cassette series) was released. Soon after, "Headlock", Thomas' seminal LP was also published by Generations Unlimited. Excited by these recordings, I invited Thomas to come to New York City for his debut solo concert. It was impossible to tell from his recordings how he was making all that sound so I was very intrigued to hear him play live. He arrived with enough equipment to half fill the space and his enthusiasm and energy filled up the remaining space. Thomas created intense walls of shifting sonic architecture with strong yet subtle dynamics. This live recording demonstrates the fluid sonic capabilities and total enthusiasm for which Thomas Dimuzio has since earned a reputation as a live performer." —Gen Ken Montgomery

Small image of cover art Sonicism [RRRecords, 1997] Dramatic studio works-years in the making! "Dimuzio is something of a find. His double CD provides a wealth of diverse, thoughtful, industrial ambience. It would take practically the length of a review just to list Dimuzio's instruments, sampled sound sources and field recordings; the list would include not only guitars and synthesizers, but also clarinet, water spigot (!), short-wave radio, shrink-wrap machine, conveyor belt, thunderstorm, bees, fire and freight trains. Dimuzio's methodology is generally consistent throughout the two discs, without becoming overly predictable. He favors slow disclosures rather than sudden revelations, and most of his pieces unfold at leisure, sometimes beginning at a subliminal level. (This is a minor irritation on several tracks, as it results in over a minute of apparently dead air while the piece struggles toward audibility.) Characteristically, Dimuzio uses thick, harmonically rich drones, with little percussion as such, but sometimes with regular pulses and patterns. Ocassionally, as in "AutoNation", a relentless rhythmic intensity emerges; on "Clearcut" or "Atonement," the mood turns harsh and abrasive. More often, though, Dimuzio's pieces have a kind of quiet mystery to them, but whatever the emotional quality of the piece, close listening reveals a great deal of subtle, subterranean movement and evidence of an impressive talent. Even allowing for the double CD format, there is more "meat" on this industrial bone than on any six of the typical releases in the genre." —William Tilland, Option

Small image of cover art Louden [Odd Size Records, 1997] Remastered selections from the cassette releases Delineation of Perspective (Generations Unlimited), Flux (Gench) and 19th Monkey Schism (Xkurzhen Sound). "Louden remasters original cassette releases from 1987 and 88 (Delineation of Perspective and Flux) exploring noise processes not just as sublime tumult (although "Of Vast and Barren, Rotting Wastelands" has an undeniable magnitude) but through a more abstract analysis of process and technique. "Self-Proclaimed Contention (Without Variation)", using bass, microphone, processors and mixer, is a series of dynamic build-ups segued over each other: an endless take-off that conveys the velvet thunder of intergalactic spacecraft rather than Industrial screaming metal. Dimuzio's equipment includes samplers, analogue synths, E-bow, and tape recorder - the mixture of technical systems generating an intelligent vocabulary of power, impulse, velocity and rhythm. A nice foray into the experiential complexities of modernism." —Matt ffyche, The Wire

Small image of cover art HEADLOCK [ReR Megacorp, 1998] CD reissue of 1989 debut LP originally released by Generations Unlimited. "This is one of those rare records where the artist takes the best qualities of other artists I admire, adds his own individuality, and seems to move everything up a notch. In varying proportions Dimuzio captures the excitement, careening adventurousness, and occasional harshness of Due Process; the shimmering sedation of Organum; and the primal, magical environments of Cranioclast. In a couple of places I thought of King Crimson making a discontinuous jump into noise experimentation. Rather than theme-development-melody, etc., Dimuzio works with moods, qualities, and ideas in evolution. While some of the sounds are recognizable, they seem embedded in contexts that make them new or unusual - check out the slightly revving engine. Side one has most of the storms of swirling, peaking distortion, but it doesn't seem irritating, blended as it is with so many other soothing sounds. Acoustic guitar, vocals, and other sounds from many sources are often in the mix. "Sallow" is a beautiful experience, while many others are thrilling. Although a one-man effort using tons of samples and computer-MIDI stuff, the record has a very live feel. Recommended." —Tom Grove, Option

Small image of cover art Markoff Process [RRRecords, 1994] Improvised electronics recorded live in concert-combines extracts from Sone Songs (Realizations Recordings), Remote (1Zer0), and lightswitch (Gench). "This CD is an impressive document which features excerpts from concerts by Thomas Dimuzio from 1990 and 1991 (such as performances at Generator, New Music America, Sonic Disturbance Festival and more). All tracks were improvised using a system of digital samplers and processors. Dimuzio has a unique touch, one that unburies a wealth of textures and creates a wealth of hidden treasures for the ear. An unusal soundtrack for the mind which constantly weaves an unending universe." —Daniel Plunkett, ND

Dimmer (Thomas Dimuzio and Joseph Hammer)

Small image of cover art The Shining Path [Melon Expander/Gench/LAFMS, 2007] Dimmer is a duo comprising live sampling pioneer Thomas Dimuzio and tape-loop maestro Joseph Hammer. swallowing audiences with their dark explorations of sound, Dimmer specializes in a symbiotic sound process as they continually loop, reloop, sample and resample within an interactive feedback circuit linking both artists. For their debut CD, Dimmer melds their recursive circuits into rich and seething sonic masses with subtle waves pulsing sound within sound. Ripe with theme and variation, The Shining Path suspends the listener over dim and dank planes on an aural trip spanning and scanning from a celestial vista. Nearly every aspect of Dimmer's live performances grace The Shining Path, yet this is not a live document, but rather a pastiche and reworking of everything Dimmer has accomplished in their years of performing as a duo. Jointly released by Melon Expander, Gench, and LAFMS.

Negativland

Small image of cover art Thigmotactic [Seeland, 2008] “Thigmotactic” continues in Negativland’s decades long collage and cut-up tradition, but while the trademark sound of found audio elements is heard through-out, the cutting up and collage is also in the lyrics, created by combining dream journals, bits of advertisements, found poems, automatic writings, stream of consciousness, old National Geographic articles, and more. The fifteen songs and two instrumentals were written, composed and performed by Negativland’s Mark Hosler, with contributions from the rest of the group, and with well-known San Francisco noisemaker Thomas Dimuzio contributing lots of rather unexpectedly normal sounding instruments, arrangements and production.

Dan Burke and Thomas Dimuzio

Small image of cover art Upcoming Events [No Fun Productions, 2008] Further exploring the collaborative powers of Illusion Of Safety mastermind Dan Burke and prolific sound crafter Thomas Dimuzio, Upcoming Events is an unending spur of equal parts gorgeous and uncomfortably perplexing sound spread of 15 tracks. Crackles of electronic fire, tremolo-infused waves of sustained guitar, broken music boxes and found sounds among all other sorts of unfounded wails of gargantuan melancholy drone, Burke and Dimuzio's collaboration is a forceful collection of early industrial sound ruination combined with classic Krautrock ambiance of the Tangerine Dream/Cluster ilk reassuringly composed into something wholly modern and powerful.

CD $12.00

Small image of cover art Hz [Sonoris, 1999] "Dan Burke is the leader of Illusion of Safety, the 'group' that succeeded perfectly the marriage between industrial and electroacoustic musics. Thomas Dimuzio has created since his first releases an unusual music made of electronics and electroacoustics with many energies. Both have already released many records separately. Hz is made of extracts of live collaboration during performances in SF Bay Area in 1997. A very good example of improvised live electronics that won't disappoint lovers of these two brilliant musicians." —Forced Exposure

David Lee Myers and Thomas Dimuzio

Small image of cover art Uncertain Symmetry [Korm Plastics, 2002] "Now this sounds like a very interesting collaboration: knowing Myers' work as Arcane Device and Dimuzio's more 'composed' work I was pretty curious as to how these two would work out things. As far as I can undertand from the liner notes, the original material was recorded by Myers, who then handed it over to Dimuzio for (re)sampling, (re)processing and (re)contextualization. Dimuzio also added feedback sine waves. My first impression was one of surprise really: gentle feedback sounds, layered and with strange beeps here and there, even sound sounding like basslines. Not quite what I had expected, knowing some of these men's work. But the surprise is certainly one of a positive kind: there is actually something light and funny in this music, it's far less serious or gloomy than I had anticipated. Matter of fact is: this could well be sold in the more experimental techno shops. I am sure that some DJ's would have great fun with it. This doesn't imply that this is merely another techno record, far from it. It is too accomplished for your average 4/4 stuff, and way too weird. But still, the more adventurous ones will like it. So, back to the disc: it contains twelve tracks of varying lengths and sound palette. From more drone/ambient works to beepy pieces with pretty high-strung energy. And even melodic ones (although very odd), that somehow seem to hold my favour most. Who would have thought? A very varied CD, both in style and in atmosphere. Recommended". —Meelkop Roel, Vital Weekly

Chris Cutler and Thomas Dimuzio

Small image of cover art Dust [ReR Megacorp, 2002] "Three years after Quake, Chris Cutler and Thomas Dimuzio came back with a second serving of confusing electrified percussion and sampling. If anything, this album goes even further in blurring distinctions between the two protagonists' contributions, between acoustic and electronic, between real-time performance and post-production. Dust consists of two highly demanding 20-minute pieces that have been over-subdivides in pure Cutler fashion. “Requiem" is pure live action from a concert in Albuquerque, New Mexico, late 2000. Dimuzio uses samples of an elemental/drone nature (wind, growling tectonic sounds), plus he samples and processes the sounds produced by the percussionist, himself playing his trademark electric drums (a drum kit equipped with microphones routed through effects and a mixer). The resulting music is a captivating chunk of maximalist electroacoustics, filled with unheard sounds and textures — Cutler's Solo CD with an extra layer of interaction. The origins of “Universal Decoding Machine" are found in a French studio on July 21, 2002. Using a similar set-up, Cutler and Dimuzio improvised while EM Thomas walked in and outside the studio wearing a binaural microphone set. His (her?) input was transmitted to engineer Bob Drake who processed and fed it back to the musicians through loudspeakers. Later, Dimuzio added overdubs, shaped and remixed the whole piece into its final form. It feels less spontaneous, much closer to electroacoustic composition, with an episode of noisy techno thrown in to destabilize the listener (and it works). Dimuzio is known for the depth of his sonic assemblages and Dust makes no exception. After going through this album, if you feel 41 minutes is too short a duration, maybe you need to listen again and pay closer attention." (4 stars) —François Couture, All Music Guide

Small image of cover art Quake [ReR Megacorp, 1999] "This is ex-Henry Cow, Art Bears and Pere Ubu drummer Chris Cutler in improvised collaboration with electronic drone master Thomas Dimuzio, recorded live in Portland, ME and Lowell, MA, 3/99. Chris performs on electric drum kit, Pin mikes & piezo mikes, Boss multi effects unit, pitch shifter, whammy pedal, digitec pds 8000, egg slicer, bows, steel bars, and beaters. Thomas performs on digital sampler, shortwave radio, and CD player. The sampler allows for live sampling and processing, taking feeds from Chris, the shortwave radio and CD sound sources. A maelstrom of subterranean scrappings, violent tectonic displacements, and occasional cataclysmic beats. Watch out for the sustained notes and and melodies pouring out of the electrified drum kit. In Cutler's hands, the whole instrument is wired like an electric guitar, then Dimuzio reprocesses it all, draping the soundscape in yards of black velvet. Having said all of that, the music can also be surprisingly subtle & gentle." —Forced Exposure

Chris Cutler, Thomas Dimuzio and C.W. Vrtacek

Small image of cover art Preacher in Naked Chase Guilty [PONK/ReR Megacorp, 1995] Live recording, reprocessed, of a concert in Hartford, Connecticut for surround sound, events, and structure/not structure. Models: Bruegel and Pollack. Tracked so you can reprogram the score, which is modular. All human life is in there! A document. Beautiful packaging that includes a 14 page booklet. "Every few months I receive a CD that I am truly excited about getting sent in for review. Usually it's from a band or performer that I've been following for many years. Chris Cutler have been very prolific over the years, and I probably have close to everything that he's worked on — from the early Henry Cow to the recent experimental improv stuff — I even have his books and magazine articles. When I first put on this new CD from Ponk Records it immediately reminded me of the Cutler/Frith live album, but with three performers (C.W. Vrtacek playing guitar and Thomas Dimuzio working on the sythesizers) it has a much fuller, more varried sound. Recorded live at a 1993 performance in Connecticut, it was mixed down from 66 to 44 minutes. I carefully listened to this one as is the tradition with *difficult music* and it wasn't until it played completely through that I noticed it was divided up into 25 different *cuts*. The liner notes explained how listeners are encouraged to play this disk on "shuffle play" to create a new listening experience each time. My player doesn't have that option but it's great to find unique CDs like this that truly make use of this new technology." —Factsheet Five

5uu's

Small image of cover art Hunger's Teeth [ReR Megacorp, 1994] Years in the making! The 5uu's (Bob Drake, Dave Kerman, and Sanjay Kumar) combine their avant-rock stylings with the sonic dementia of Thomas Dimuzio. "One of the Top 10 releases of 1994-incidental music for Guernica."—BOSTON ROCK. "Imagine Jon Anderson fronting an American avant-garde rock group (but maybe he did get close to the edge on parts of Tales and Relayer!). Hunger's Teeth is the most exciting rock album I've heard this year. No, not Anderson exactly, but Robert Drake's vocals do bear a striking resemblance to the Yes man's "angelic" tenor. Is this "progressive rock" for the '90's? A celebration of intricately layered arrangements and polyrhythmic playing, effortlessly combining '70's grandeur with avant-rock, contemporary collage and computing - and only one track in 11 over six minutes! The musicianship (also David Kerman and Sanjay Kumar, plus guests) is superb, not showy, always at the service of the experimental approach to song structure - lots of convoluted instrumental passages that return almost miraculously to "refrains". Brilliant." —Chris Blackford

Due Process (Thomas Dimuzio, Ron Lessard and John Wiggins)

Small image of cover art Combine [RRRecords, 1995] "Ahh. Here's some serious art damage that careens from ambient industrial to the astringent squonks, bleeps and clamor of '60s avant-garde to the angst-ridden sonic shards and noisy electronic reflections of the post-industrial mess we find ourselves in now. Featuring Tom Dimuzio, Ron Lessard (the man behind RRRecords) and John Wiggins, Due Process knows how to crank it out. While they can create a terrific din, the music actually leans a bit in the ambient direction, with lower dynamics and muffled timbres, albeit with a raucous pandemonium of noise just beneath the surface." —Dean Suzuki, Option

Patronized Humoplasms

Small image of cover art All Broke Down-Can't Be Fixed [Gench, 1988] Magical moments, caught on tape from freely improvised jams, edited and remixed into a full length release. Drummer, C.J. Cooper (R.I.P) and his incredible rhythmic genius deserves selective appreciation. Lo-fi at its finest from the Vortex. Originally released by Xkurzhen Sound. "To quote the extensive liner notes: "This tape preserves select moments of the Plasm's Vortex Travels harnessed from live cassette recordings of freely improvised musics; enhanced through the means of multi-tracking, digital sampling and stereo effects processing—although many cuts still remain in their original form." This should give you the general idea that this group of people is another unit seeking "something" by means of electronic improvised explorations. A pretty fair representation of the genre, at that." —Bryan Baker, Sonic Detours

Small image of cover art x+y=xy (10 Citas a Ciega) [Alku, 2002] "Alku is a small CDR label which never cease to surprise the listener with new ideas. '10 Citas A Ciegas' means '10 Blind Dates'. Twenty artists were invited to send in a track of exactely two minutes, which was coupled to another one of two minutes. Alku made the selection for this combinations, so nobody knew what the final result would be. X+Y=XY indeed. It turned out to be strange combinations, like Needle & Thomas Dimuzio or Plank and Kubin & Garland. One of the great advantages of laptop musics is of course that the possibilities are unlimited and in the realms of digital sound anything sounds digital and most of the time good. If you ever saw some people improvising on a laptop, you know what I mean. Here the laptop crackles work in various directions, from technoid lounge (Beige/Mainpal) to noise (Errorsmith/Opopop) and a most curious piece between Kevin Drumm and Francisco Lopez - who incorporate the most of noise and a bit of silence... and Wobbly and Time's Up going for the real feedback noise. Curious meetings here in the world of blind dates. Worth checking out!" — Frans de Waard, Vital Weekly

Small image of cover art End ID [Digital Narcis, 1999] "It is both the end of the decade and the end of the century, so record companies are trying to honor this century with as many collections as they can. I'm not quite sure how this music directly relates to music and/or media in the 20th century but it is a fine collection of some of the most innovative current electronic music artists. This is a two-cd set which features 20 tracks from Japanese artists like Aube, Ryoji Ikeda, Koji Marutani and Toru Yamanaka; American composers and professors like Andrew Lagowski, Maggi Payne and Thomas Dimuzio plus others from around the world. The highlights include 'Ouroboros 7,' a field recording from French artist Eric La Casa, 'Ccdeinnoorsttu' (dedicated to the Coca Cola Company) by M.Behrens, and '9m14s Over Vietnam' by Atau Tanaka. Along with the 2 discs in a visually appealing package is a little booklet with brief media/invention/event 'highlights' of the 20th Century. A good package, nice concept and a lot of music for a reasonable price. I'm impressed with the selections from the artists, as they're all well done tracks rather than the typical throw-aways for the comps." — Jon Whitney, Brainwashed

Small image of cover art Testament [RRRecords, 1996] International experimental music compilation featuring Thomas Dimuzio, Jerome Noetinger, John Wiggins, Eric Chaselow, Michael Prime, Artifcal Memory Trace, Koji Marutani, RLW, Tim Walters and Nick Peck. "RRR's new compilation of noise-concretions features many of the genre's top-notch exponents, all putting in commendable performances. As one would expect, this ain't no dance disc; sounds instead being sculpted from a boggling array of Cageian environmental and manipulated sources - Nick Peck's airport sound scapes, John Wiggins' Negativlandian cut & paste work, Jerome Noetinger (the 3" genius behind the explorative Metamkine label) and his 'Le Ballon Rouge' sounding like the testing room in a prophylactic factory. Strangely enough though, for a genre so apparently unlimited in its audio potential, it is ultimately astounding how similar in approach many of these pieces sound, even when gleaned from vastly different sources and techniques. In fact it is often difficult to tell when one artist's contribution ends and another's begins. The sheer abstraction of the work belies any real trace of the creator, and thereby leaves Testament sound like the work of one 10-headed, globe-spanning musique-concrete-layer."—Opprobrium

More of the same on "Murmur," which closes the side. The same general feel continues on side two, but with a flutter of a bit more activity." —Russ Stedman "...Dimuzio skillfully blends an array of unearthly sounds into an often moody, very coherent whole throughout.
